An impressive castle near Paris
Listed as a historical monument, Pierrefonds Castle is an imposing fortified castle located near the forest of Compiègne, in the Oise region.
Some anecdotes about this magnificent building...
- This castle was built at the end of the 14th century by Duke Louis d'Orléans.
- Destroyed 3 centuries later, Napoleon III decided to entrust the reconstruction to the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, to make it THE ideal castle as it would have existed in the Middle Ages.
But who was Viollet-le-Duc, this original architect?
His name may ring a bell... Indeed, Viollet-le-Duc is the famous architect of numerous monuments, each as sumptuous as the next!
Fascinated by the Middle Ages, this emblematic character wanted to enhance the medieval heritage by restoring cathedrals and castles that were falling into ruin in his own way. Viollet-le-Duc created, among other things, the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris and the ramparts of Carcassonne.
But far from being a beloved man... In fact, he was far from being unanimous!
Known for his overflowing imagination, he did not hesitate during his restorations to create elements straight out of his mind, which deviated totally from historical reality.
A fanciful man, he did not hesitate to invent medieval creatures, including the crocodile gutter that you will discover during your visit to Pierrefonds Castle! This peculiarity had the gift of annoying many historians...
