Visit the Cordeliers Convent
Located in Neuville-en-Hez, the Notre-Dame de la Garde Cordeliers Convent is one of the historic sites to discover during your stay in the Oise region.
Nestled near the Hez-Froidmont Forest, the site is listed as a Historic Monument, thanks to its former convent porch.
A monument steeped in history
Founded between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Cordeliers Convent originated from a hermitage first mentioned in the 15th century.
It was here in 1470 that a man named Montigny retired, followed by an initial community of penitents, before the site became a Franciscan convent.
The members were commonly known as "Cordeliers" due to the rope (*corde*) they wore around their waists.
In the 17th century, the site became a house of detention, housing prisoners and later the mentally ill, before being demolished in 1886.
Today, all that remains of the Franciscan monastery is the porch, a section of the perimeter wall, and an ice cellar.
