The museum

A tour takes you on a journey through history. Discover the famous Armistice wagon where the armistice of 11 November 1918 and the armistice of 22 June 1940 were signed. To be precise, it is actually an identical wagon, the original having been destroyed on Hitler's orders in 1945.

In addition to the Armistice wagon, the museum has several rooms dedicated to the two world wars, including:

• The Treaty of Versailles (1919)
• The collapse of France
• The construction of the Maginot Line...

You can admire many authentic objects, including soldiers' personal effects, weapons and period photographs.

The Rethondes clearing

Outside the Armistice Memorial, take time to wander through the Clairière de Rethondes to admire the monuments dedicated to the soldiers and victims of the conflicts experienced by France since 1870.

These include

• The statue of Marshal Foch (1937)
• The Sacred Slab, inaugurated on 11 November 1922
• The Monument des Alsaciens Lorrains commemorating the recovery of Alsace and Lorraine
• The Covenant of Peace, a 3.50 m high bronze ring

You can also pay your respects in the Garden of Memory, created as a tribute to the last soldier to die in the First World War, Augustin Trébuchon.

Museum opening times:

• 1 April to 30 September: daily from 10am to 6pm
• 1 October to 31 March: daily from 10am to 5.30pm, closed on Tuesdays
• Tickets cost €8 per adult and €6 per child (aged 7 to 18).
